3 standard widths

All widths are possible with sliding doors. We take a look at the most common formats and their uses in the home.

Passage of a single person

Doors used regularly, such as toilet or bathroom doors, are generally designed to accommodate one person. Here, the doors are usually between 28″ and 30″.

Opening accessible to people with reduced mobility

To ensure the passage of a person in a wheelchair, you need to allow at least 36″. With a swing door, this passage width is measured with the door open at 90°.

If you opt for a sliding door, simply take into account the width available when the leaf is open.

Wide sliding doors

You will find wide sliding doors with one leaf over 6′, or two leaves covering openings of over 13′. These solutions enhance the feeling of space and lightness. With glazed or semi-opaque sliding walls, the effect of openness is accentuated for a very relaxing ambience. Ideal for an opening onto a living room or a vast master suite with bathroom.

Standard door heights

The height of a standard swing door is 80″. Doors 36″ wide by 80″ high are what you will regularly see in apartment buildings. These dimensions reduce the size of the opening, while allowing unrestricted passage for most people.

With sliding doors, the calculation is somewhat different. The door wings slide along tracks fixed to the floor and ceiling. The aesthetic appeal of sliding walls also lies in their dimensions, which perfectly match those of the room. This can give a very solemn effect to the opening. Yet despite their size, sliding doors blend seamlessly into the decor. It moves smoothly, discreetly and silently. When open, it can be recessed into the wall. This is known as a sliding pocket door.
